The last part of my workshop gives the children an opportunity to create their Heart's Animal in tangible form.
Literacy
The children are then encouraged to write poems about their experience.
These are usually shape or acrostic poems.Arts & Crafts
The children paint their animals and the journey their animal took them on.
They can also make masks of their animals. (link to photos of workshops)Rhythm
Recreate the rhythm of their animal's heartbeat using African Drums.
This leads on to the sounds their animal makes as it moves and the child's dance begins.Jewellery Making
The children make friendship bracelets for their Heart's Animal and then wear them home.Diary Writing
I always encourage the children to start a diary of their work with their Heart's Animal. In this I suggest they write their adventures and stick photos or their own drawings of their Heart's Animal.Independent Learning.
Introduces the idea to the children that they know much more than they might think. One little girl was drawing a picture of her Heart's Animal, a giraffe and she stopped not knowing what colour a giraffe's spots were. She asked me and I suggested that she ask her giraffe. So she closed her eyes and a few moments later returned to her colouring. I came over and asked her what her giraffe had said. She looked up and with quiet, calm confidence said "brown" and she returned to her drawing.
